By michelle marine on november 14th, 2018 | no comments » made from up-cycled spoons and seed packets, these diy plant markers would make a great homemade gift for the gardener in your life! now that it's november, i'm trying to think of creative gifts to make for the upcoming holidays. I've been meaning to make homemade plant markers for a long time, and i finally made some that i'm really excited to share with you today.

If your wooden spoons have seen better days or the handle breaks, find a new use outdoors as a plant label. Labelled with a permanent marker – i ‘plant’ my broken wooden spoons in the garden so they are still useful.

Burned wood garden markers

Clamp your wood slices into a vice and drill holes (about half an inch deep). Using your damp cloth, wipe off each wood slice. The slices come pre-sanded, so this is just to get the saw dust and bits off. markers If you plan to use an adhesive stencil for your garden markers you’ll want to sand it down (gradually) to 240 grit so the stencil adheres properly and doesn’t leak.

These handcrafted garden markers are not your ordinary garden-variety markers. They can be customized to any plant you may have growing in your garden. I used twigs that i collected from my local park. If you don't have access to good twigs, you can usually purchase them at home-decor or garden shops. To add descriptive words, i used a wood-burning tool with a fine-point tip. You could also use a thin-point permanent marker to label them. I added extra embellishment by wrapping them with copper wire and beads. Over time the copper will turn a beautiful green. I like to use glass beads because they catch the light and add a little sparkle to your yard.

The weather has warmed up here in texas and it’s time to get my backyard pots planted and my herbs growing!  i love to fill large pots with herbs and let them grow on the patio all summer long. Last year i marked my pots with painted twig plant markers but this year the herb pots will be marked with wood burned plant markers.

Funny Plant Markers - Garden Labels - Plant Markers for Gardener

Gardeners often regret not marking their expensive and beautiful plants with high-quality and well-designed plant markers. Until now, there have not been many good options available. The plant tags that come with your plant purchases are meant to be temporary nursery labels and are not made to last in winter conditions or stay in the ground. They are easily removed by wind, rakes, and power blowers. Some of them also become brittle and snap. That could make any gardener unhappy.

Make your own garden plant markers

Traditional garden markers identify landscape plants & trees: classically inspired, they are found in arboretums & botanical gardens around the world. We make garden markers for all levels of garden makers.

Last weekend i finally started my spring garden! since it’s been in the 80s much of the last month, it’s the perfect time to start a garden here in florida. I purchased this raised bed kit and had it up in no time. After filling it with organic potting soil and mushroom compost i put some tomato and pepper plants in. The finishing touch was adding the clay stamped garden markers i made.

I spent part of wednesday doing a final (i hope) clean-up of the garden plots. It was still very muddy, but i picked my way through the area grabbing plastic plant markers, bits of garden tape, styrofoam, and miscellaneous synthetic trash. Going through the plots this way is meditative, and i got to thinking about what i can do differently this year. Picking up a ton of plastic plant markers -- in the fifth of my clean-ups, and after an eagle scout group did a fall clean-up -- has made me adamant about being more thoughtful about what non-synthetic items i bring into the garden this year, and how i want to mark my plants.

While i can’t get my fingers in the dirt just yet, i can do a little prep work. That prep work right now is making upcycled canning lid plant markers. This is a great winter project. It helps us get ready for the garden season and makes use of those lids as we eat through our pantry stores.

By grace bonney i’ve had plants and gardening on my mind all week, so it only seemed fitting to roll up my sleeves and make a few garden markers of my own. I haven’t worked with sculpey clay since i was probably seven years old, so this project was both a blast and a great flashback for me. It took me only a few minutes to roll out the dough and cut it and after a quick trip through the oven, it was ready to use! these would be so fun as a house-warming gift for anyone with a yard or window garden, or as more substantial gift tags later in the year. The best part? it was under $5 to make- happy planting! xo, grace.

I have a large group of herbs in pots on my deck. I am lucky that they are producing here in nc from early spring until well into the fall. The rosemary and chives even stay green all winter for me. I thought it would be fun to make some plant markers for the herbs. Since i am the gardening cook , what better markers that kitchen utensils?.

What Supplies Do You Need to Paint Garden Marker Stones?

It isn't easy to find "lovage" plant markers at the garden center, but if you paint it yourself, you can have a marker for any plant you can think of. The bright pops of color offer a bit of whimsy to the garden, and, if you get tired of them, the stones can easily be painted over and repurposed. Expect your painted stone plant markers to last a season or two, maybe even longer if you take them up after the season is done and store them in your shed or garage.

It’s been several years since the diy chalkboard art craze swept the internet and countless home and garden ideas for using chalkboard paint appeared online. And, restaurant menu wall art went to a whole new level. The photos here are from a bunch of test projects i tried several years ago to see how they would do in outdoor conditions.
