The benefits to physical health are well documented but it is the mental health benefits that i believe have become just as important for children, thanks to the pace of our modern day lives. One way to encourage your kids to spend more time outdoors is by creating an outdoor play area that will have them begging to be outside. One of the first things i like to do when creating a new play area from dirt or overhauling an existing space is think about how i can break up the space into smaller areas and what budget friendly materials or planting i could use to do this. I suggest starting with the essentials – in my opinion this includes finding ways to incorporate smaller sensory, quiet and ‘secret' spaces throughout the larger outdoor area.

Many of us have happy memories of spending hours at a time in a playhouse or treehouse throughout our childhood. It was a place to play, a secret clubhouse, and a place to spend time just being a kid in whatever way suited us best. As adults, we know how important it is to have our own spaces – like man caves and she sheds – but we sometimes forget that this is important for children as well. It is just as important for them to have safe spaces where they can destress, read, play board games with their friends, or just have quiet time.

Preschoolers need open spaces to run, jump and climb. This activity not only provides opportunities for children to play cooperatively with friends but also helps them settle down later for quiet activities. Finding an appropriate open space can be a challenge for preschool teachers and is often solved by designing an outdoor play yard.

Secret spaces in outdoor play areas can be large or small but are usually tucked away in areas of the yard that still allow for supervision but help children to feel safe to make up their games or take some time out without prying eyes and adults interfering in their play. You might use plants, pots, fencing, screening or trees to divide and create spaces.

Children within the same age group will often develop at different paces, and not all equipment will be appropriate for every child. Your child care center’s playground design should keep all children in mind, providing both active and quiet spaces and varied equipment that offers different levels of challenge and accommodations. Inclusive design can make all the difference between a negative and positive experience on the playground at a daycare center. A child with autism will likely feel more at ease on the playground when there’s a cozy, quiet space to retreat to at times. A child who uses a wheelchair for mobility will benefit from flat surfaces, wide paths and adequate space between play areas.

Just like indoors, outdoor spaces must be organized for independence, easy use, and learning. Children and youth must be able to easily access materials and equipment. Outdoor paths, walkways, and stairs should be clearly marked and free of obstructions. It is important to make sure gross-motor play can happen safely in one area without disrupting play in another area. For example, a bicycle or skating path should not go right through an area where children and youth are drawing with chalk or playing hopscotch. You also want to separate the quiet activities (art, writing, and reading) from the loud and active activities (ball play, bikes, and running).
