The family garden is a certified organic farm. This means that absolutely no synthetic chemicals are used anywhere on our land and none are applied to your food. Being certified by a third party, qcs, gives the consumer the added assurance that everything we produce is monitored by a strict and thorough set of rules. There are many local farms advertising their goods as "sustainable grown", "not-sprayed", or even "organic". While some of these farms are truly producing a chemical free product, some farmers many take advantage of a consumer’s trust and falsely label their produce, many times selling conventional produce bought on the open market as coming from their own fields and still somehow being "organic". Organic certification only adds a small expense to the overall farm production budget. The expense is well worth the cost to ensure folks eat their food at ease, knowing that their food is clean.

The family garden plan is going to become one of my staple gardening books; i already know this. It is general enough for a beginner, yet provides a bunch of detail for gardeners who are more advanced. This book is meant to be more than just an informative read. Ms. Norris includes many, many charts and worksheets, covering a wide range of activities: how to calculate your family’s food needs for a year; crop rotation planning; seed starting chart; pest & disease chart; that’s to name just a few of them.

We can grow plants from seeds or from little plants that you can buy at a garden center. Even walmart has plants or seeds you can buy. You can buy a bundle of onion sets for very little money. All you really need to know is that the root end goes down. This can be a fun way to grow some food for your family and make a few memories. Some of my favorite things to eat from the garden are tomatoes, green beans, squash or eggplant.

How Much Garden Space Do You Need?

You. The greatest investment that you can make in the child-friendly garden is time – your own time. Being in the garden with the children helps you and them form the connection with it, and it being a safe enjoyable space.

Like all plants, vegetables need the sun to kick-start photosynthesis. The fastest-growing vegetables need full sun ( at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight a day) without blockage from trees, shrubs, or fences. That’s why you won’t have much success if you plant sun-loving vegetables in shady spaces. If your yard provides partial shade, plant vegetables and herbs that tolerate those conditions, such as lettuce, kale, chard, spinach, chives, cilantro, parsley, and thyme. Root vegetables like carrots, radishes, and beets might also work if your site gets at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day. Or if you have a sunny patio, switch to container gardening. That way you can place sun-loving vegetables and herbs such as tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, basil, dill, and rosemary, where they’ll do well.
