The next step is to fold your material in half with the pattern facing inwards. Your clasp will join the two ends of the bag together temporarily. Before sewing sides sew along each side of the material to join the two edges of your bag together. Sew 1/2 inch (approximately 1 cm) in from the edge of your material. As always when you're sewing it's good practice to do a few backstitches at the beginning and end to prevent unravelling.

1 comment are you team wrapping paper or team things to use for a reusable gift bags good things to put in gift bags what things to put in a bridal shower gift bags ? once upon a time, i was team wrapping paper. I liked using unusual ephemera, or embellishing large-format blank paper. It was fun to upcycle paper, and i loved how cute and unique my presents looked. The problem, though, is that even upcycled wrapping paper generally gets thrown away after the present is opened. Not even my depression-raised grandparents, who saved bread bags and rubber bands, spent christmas afternoon picking the tape off of wrapping paper and saving it to be re-used.

Growing up, my mom’s exuberant gift wrapping skills often received more attention than the gift itself. And for good reason–she had a way of turning ordinary materials into beautiful works of art. One of her many tricks was taking scraps of leftover wallpaper and turning them into gift bags. I teamed up with the fine folks of ferm living (thank you!), my fellow copenhagen neighbors, to use their lovely graphic wallpaper line and recreate her little secret just in time for the holidays. It’s cheaper and a whole lot more fun than buying store bought, (but then again, isn’t it always?!).

30 Minute Handled Gift Bag

Article summaryx to make a paper bag, first cut out a rectangle-shaped piece of paper that’s about twice as wide as you want your paper bag to be. Rotate the paper so one of the long sides is at the bottom. Then, fold the bottom edge up about 2 inches (5 cm), crease along the fold, and unfold. Fold the short sides of the rectangle in toward the center so they overlap slightly, and glue or tape them together where they overlap. Flip the bag over so the glued or taped crease is facing down. Next, open the bag slightly and press the side creases inward about 1 ½ inches (4 cm). Press down on the inverted sides to crease them and create an accordion effect. Now, fold up the top layer of the bottom of the bag along the existing crease you made before. Flatten the bottom of the bag by pressing down on the corners. Then, fold and glue the top edge of the bottom down to the horizontal crease. Fold and glue and bottom edge of the bottom up to the same crease. Use your hand to open up the bag, and punch or poke 2 holes near the top of the bag on each long side. Finally, thread a string or piece of ribbon through the holes and tie a knot on each end to make the handles. If you want to learn how to put handles on your bag, keep reading the article!.

Today i’m returning to an idea that’s similar to one i’ve shared before, but with a twist. Making gift bags from the pages of old books. I love crafting with old books. I read a while ago that books are actually quite difficult for recycling plants because of the glue that binds them, so passing them on, giving them away etc is much better. Once they are well and truly falling apart they are a great material for fun craft projects. Treating the printed pages as a patterned craft paper means we are not buying more patterned craft paper and not wasting this great resource.
