When i first moved out on my own, i discovered all the glorious books about nesting at my library and went nuts. I learned all about keeping a home (well, apartment) comfy and clean. Here we are, three years later, and i’m still fascinated by these books on organization. I could have just done a list entirely of the best books on organization, but i’ve found that having an organized home is so much more than just decluttering. It starts off with the decluttering and organizing, sure, but it also needs maintenance and love. Just like every other part of our lives. Many of the books listed here focus on not just the physical messes in our lives, but on the emotional messes, too.
I have read several home organizing books, but *this* is the one i have been waiting for! the first thing i noticed right away is that there is no skimping on quality, here. The colors are vibrant, the paper is nice and glossy and thick. The corners of the front and back covers are metal-tipped, which is nice because not only does it give the book weight, but it protects the corners from bending and fraying. Inside, the pictures are plentiful, inspiring, and gorgeous. Just flipping through the book will make you feel motivated enough to start tackling an area of your house!.
By her own account, marie kondo was an unusual child, poring over lifestyle magazines to glean organizing techniques and then stealthily practicing them at home and school, confounding her family and bemusing her teachers. As she writes in “the life-changing magic of tidying up: the japanese art of decluttering and organizing,†which comes out this month in the united states and is already a best seller in her native japan and in europe, she habitually sneaked into her siblings’ rooms to throw away their unused toys and clothes and ducked out of recess to organize her classroom’s bookshelves and mop closet, grumbling about poor storage methodologies and pining for an s-hook.

If neither a color- nor author-based organization system works for you, consider a simple genre-based one. “organizing by genre works well for most clients, especially when they’re storing books in multiple rooms,†says wahl. “it helps to match the genre to the space: for example, cookbooks in the kitchen, business and self-help in the home office, fiction and travel in the bedroom, etc. â€.

31 days to a clutter-free life by ruth soukup is number six on the list of best decluttering books. This is a handy guide complete with checklists of daily tasks to help you declutter your home, mind, and schedule. Ruth does a good job of dividing the categories into manageable tasks. On instagram alone, there are almost 900 photos available for inspiration.
With the progress of electronic equipments and computer technology for taking motion pictures and processing huge data, an increasing number of people now own and use camcorders to make home videos that capture their experiences and document their lives. Home video has no time limits and no restriction in content (lienhart, 2000), so these videos easily add up to many hours of material. However, the organization and edition of the large amount of information contained in home videos present technical challenges due to the lack of efficient tools. Though a number of prototype systems for content-based video analysis and retrieval have been constructed, for example, as shown in (wactlar, 1996; chang, 1998), the development of tools and systems specialized for addressing home video, that is for extracting, representing, organizing, browsing, querying and retrieving video, is just on a preliminary stage (huang, 2005; wu, 2005). Several tasks are needed to confront to make the organization of home video possible and feasible. Home video has certain particular characteristics. The organization of home video should be based on the understanding of video structures, and by taking advantages of this structure. Home video are completed and stored straight in compressed domain. In order to save both time and space, techniques that manipulate home videos directly in compressed domain should be considered (wang, 2003). Some typical techniques working on compressed domain could be found in (taskiran, 2004). Home video are made by shot after shot without storyline, these shots may or may not have immediate relationship. To group shots, the visual features should be extracted from every shot (gatica-perez, 2003) facing these tasks and difficulties, a novel technique is described in this article. It is based on the analysis of characteristics of home video, on the detection of motion attention regions in compressed domain, on the time weighting based on camera motion, and on a novel two-layer shot clustering approach and organization strategy. Experiments made on two home videos from mpeg-7 data set provide encouraging results.
Photo via @uk_interiors_collective rather than storing a bunch of empty moving boxes and holiday decorations in your attic space, why not turn it into a library room? just be sure your attic is finished so it has the proper bracing to support the weight of bookshelves and all of your books. Credit: rick lozier bookshelves are for more than just storing your favorite reads : they're also a great way to show off your personality and sense of style. Amanda reynal, a des moines-based designer and owner of amanda reynal interiors , couldn't agree more. "when you walk into someone's house and you look at their bookshelves , the things on their bookshelves should speak to them and be definitive of who they are," she says. This can be interpreted in a myriad of ways, from framed memories to showcased sentimental finds—but the real key is in how you bring it all together.
A room designed by jill goldberg of hudson interior designs. (michael j lee) designers today often judge a book by its color. On shelves throughout the land, books are being organized not by topic or author but by the color of their spines. Color-blocking books is a design trend that began a dozen years ago at hotels and in design magazines but continues to grow in popularity. Although it’s a bit of a hot potato in the design world, it’s a popular topic on blogs and on pinterest. Diyers stalk estate sales for old books, peeling off the jackets to see what color hides underneath.

Even the most avowed minimalist seems to have a weak spot when it comes to books (myself included!). The small space homeowners in my book came up with many creative ways to store their books, including some drool-worthy custom bookcases, but i discovered the real secret to keeping books organized lies in culling your collection at least once a year. Luckily, donating books is easy to do in most communities. Be honest with yourself about what you'll never read and make use of your local library.
A well organized book collection is a real joy and a constant source of inspiration. It deserves more than a dry list. All my books actually offers all the features you find on full city or even state libraries, including such things as the actual dimensions of each book (crucial data when building book cases and shelving units!) yet is simple enough that even a complete novice can start building their database within seconds of opening it. Considering the hidden power and sophistication i would perhaps have preferred some more engaging button icons but they are clear and self-explanatory without crimping your style - and there's always that html option.
A movie ticket stub from your favorite film or a program from your kid’s school play may tug at your heartstrings, but these mementos aren’t doing your space any favors. So why keep them around? we know what you’re thinking: what if yesteryear’s trinkets bring you joy? find a way to consolidate ’em. Instead of having a box with old birthday cards from grandma sue, place them in a scrapbook that can fit on your newly organized bookshelf. Or store your treasured family recipes in these clever ways.
Sort books first empty shelves and sort books by genre, alphabetically, or by color – whatever works for you. Hold on to favorite page-turners and reference books, plus anything you haven’t read yet (after a year, pass it on). Then store books where you’ll use them: novels to curl up with in the living room; kids’ books at a child-friendly height in the family room. Arrange books upright to support spines, group by size, and separate paperbacks and hardcovers, if possible. Large volumes can be stacked, ideally no more than three high to prevent damage.
After you’ve categorized your novels into the sorting of your choice, it’s now time to style and add a little personality to the bookshelf. Orientation of books: don’t be afraid to stack your books and even use them as makeshift risers. To add a little flair and break up the vertical lines, stack books horizontally in between. Alternate orientations throughout the bookshelf for a stylish display.
Carbone personally likes to group her books with a system she calls vibrational shelving, which organizes titles by series/author and also by genre. “i don’t like shifting books when i get new ones so this method lets me add things without having to shift my entire shelf system the way i would if it were alphabetical or color coded. It does also mean i spend time staring meaningfully at my shelves trying to figure out what isn’t working and what books need to be moved sometimes, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. â€.
Arranging your books by color may be aesthetically pleasing, but if it doesn’t gel with your instincts around organizing and, as a result, you’re constantly searching for that one book, don’t cave to the pressure of instagrammable shelves! organize your book collection in a way that works for you and your reading habits, whether that’s by author, genre, or yes, by color. I have hundreds of books and prefer to organize mine by genre so i can easily find what i need when the short story or poetry mood strikes.
