If you do not have a sewing machine, there is no need to fear. It’s quite possible to do without it. You’ll need to make sure you have needles, and a sharp tool for cutting (a scissor or rotary cutter will work fine) and just follow the steps below. Mark where you are going to hem and how much you want to shorten your jeans. This is up to you to decide what suits you best.

Wing needles are typically associated with heirloom sewing, the kind used for christening gowns and victorian linens. But my wing needle hemstitch technique adds a fresh accent to contemporary clothing and accessories and is an easy, yet lovely way to secure a facing or hem by machine—it’s one of my favorite ways to finish and simultaneously embellish a garment.

Today i’m going to show you how to blind hem with your first thing to practice when starting sewing top things to buy when sewing things you need to know when sewing machine. First, get your sewing machine ready. Put your blind hem presser foot on your machine, and set your machine to the correct stitch. The stitch should look like mine does below. Line your hem on your sewing machine. You will line the folded end up with the middle metal piece of your presser foot.

Thread the sewing machine and the bobbin with the color thread that matches the item you are hemming. If you have a blind hem stitch foot, put it on the sewing machine and select the blind hem stitch. Note:  if you do not have a blind hem stitch foot, you can use the zigzag foot. If your sewing machine is not preprogrammed with a blind hem stitch, you can use a zigzag stitch. If using the zigzag stitch, you will have to adjust the stitch length and stitch width.

Follow the steps below to use the blind hem stitch 1. Turn the machine off. 2. Reverse the skirt or pants. 3. Fold the fabric along the desired edge of the hem, and press. 4. Use a chalk to mark on the fabric about 5 mm (3/16 inch) from the edge of the fabric, and then baste it.

I have also marked the wrong side of my fabric with tailor’s chalk to make things a bit easier. *another note* i always recommend that you do a test sample before you start machine hemming to make sure that you’re sewing machine’s settings are right.

Get out your blind hem foot and put it on your machine. Set your machine on the blind hem stitch and use an average stitch length, between a 2 and a 3. Slide in the fabric wrong side up, and put the foot's plastic straight edge guide right up against the fold. The needle should just barely be piercing the fold of the fabric. Put the needle in the fabric, drop your presser foot, and you can start sewing.

The invisible or blind hem is a hem of pants, shirts, skirts, or dresses that is almost “invisible” to the eye on the outside of the item of clothing, this is done with a invisible or blind hem stitch. Some things should only be hemmed with this stitch! eliminating the (sometimes ugly, depending on the garment) straight stitch hem line on the bottom, outside of a garment and replacing it with a blind hem can keep the garment’s look more clean, smooth, pretty, professional or what have you. I find this stitch best suits anything formal (like suit pants, tweed pencil skirts) or anything with a heavier type material.

My purchased pants have the seam binding on them, so this literally shows exactly what i needed to know.
